Zhangjiajie
Avatar mountains by day. A lantern-lit river by night.
Four days in Zhangjiajie — the quartz sandstone pillars that inspired Pandora's floating mountains — then one night in Fenghuang, the 1,300-year-old riverside Tujia town. No 40-person tour buses, no Mandarin required.

These 1,080-meter quartz pillars rise straight up out of the pine forest, often half-wrapped in morning mist. We take the Baobai Sky Elevator up at 8am, right when the gates open, before the day tour crowds arrive. You'll get the Yuanjiajie viewing platform to yourself for photos, with no hundreds of tourists in every shot.
Walk the glass bridge 300 meters above the canyon
The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is 430 meters long, 6 meters wide, and hangs 300 meters above the gorge below. We walk it slow — no rushing, no cheesy photo props blocking your view. If you're nervous about the height, your guide will walk with you, no judgment.
Then the river town: Fenghuang after dark
We drive 2.5 hours down to Fenghuang after your second day in the mountains. By dusk, every stilt house along the Tuojiang turns on its red paper lanterns, and the warm light ripples on the water. We'll walk the stone riverside lane, stop for a cup of osmanthus tea, and eat at a Tujia family restaurant that's been run by the same family for 3 generations.
"I thought the movie Avatar mountains were just CGI — until I stood on that viewing platform and the mist moved through the pillars. And Fenghuang at night, sitting by the river eating that slow-smoked pork, I forgot to check my phone for 3 hours."
